Forty-five years ago, dissident French thinker Jacques Ellul wrote about all the contradictions and difficulties involved in maintaining what he called the “scientific-state-techno-economical complex”.
Looking ahead, he wondered out loud how it could ever be kept functioning and expanding in the future. He concluded, with foresight which seems uncanny in the 2020s: “In truth, there is one way, but only one: the most totalitarian global dictatorship that could ever exist”.

a aforementioned great fun with fiery feminist leader at suny new paltz, I mean that kind of fun and another kind: she graduated the year that an infamous college president was retiring - alice chandler - hence this was her last graduation. I had mixed it up with chandler many times on the journey of cleaning up four toxic dorms where 1,100 students lived...including successfully suing her in federal court after she removed me from the campus for being a nuisance...my friend had won some award and had access to the president at the chi-chi luncheon right after graduation. I prepared a satirical signed letter of gratitude to pres. chandler summing up events of the prior seven years...including all kinds of stuff I should not have known about...and a 1 drachma coin symbolizing a large amount of Greek money that had mysteriously turned up on campus and was somehow associated with the...the Athens extension of the college that I might not have believed existed but I had seen it with my own eyes from a taxicab window...and my friend was happy to pass the envelope to the president at lunch knowing it was somewhat, uh, controversial...that is love...I have a copy of the letter somewhere over the rainbow in my document collection... j. is the subject of the poems 'a glimpse from the ridge' and 'rain'...gleaming gemini with a wicked sense of humor...l'chiam!
After i made my previous comment, went to listen to 7/13/85. Had an interesting, if sometimes challenging afternoon, becoming enhanced these days can be like that. And i needed a treat, though i had no idea what to expect. The only thing i've ever heard about that show was that it was extraordinary, and that before the say had signs saying "We are NOT the world," fully intentional re the "We are The World" concert which was held in London [Edit: My bad,, partly in London, and partly in JFK Stadium, Philadelphia] that same day. I was in a way forced to watch it later, due to my then partner, whom i was trying to please (who was not in the same ... headspace that afternoon) Well this show was extraordinary. from opening notes to the end. What an extraordinary band, and what an exception lead voice!!! A bunch of all time versions of tunes.
Now i'm ready to listen to his one, i am sure i'll love it too.
