It was fun to read the articles as it brought back memories. I had lived in Chatham Township from 1964-1972. My brothers were born at Morristown hospital, Steve in 1952 and Tom in 1954. My family had moved to California in ‘56 (I believe) where I was born in ‘58 then went back to NJ in ‘64.
Amazing. We were young and foolish, why is it wrong to beee, youung and foolish.....Raise your hand if you know that tune. One question, about your press card thing. Why does it say "approved by the South jersey police chiefs association"? And two police...(men?) signatures. What is the police doing in a press card?
Press credentials are often issued by law enforcement agencies, or in upstate NY the NYS Sheriff's Association (given out by the county sheriff) and in NYC the NYPD (very difficult to get). They can be issued by the publication as well; or by an accrediting agency; I carry Pacifica accreditation plus National Union of Journalists UK which also gets me the International Federation of Journalists. Currently I have three credentials; in the past I had the European Union and New York State Capitol.
Reporters traditionally show up at crime and accident scenes; so that's the nature of police credentials. It's a loose form of vetting. IMO journalists must maintain a cordial and working relationship with the police, both rank and file and management. Most don't bother. But it really comes in handy.
The article as published on email is missing what is called a first reference. I started at a newspaper called the Echoes-Sentinel based in Warren Township. At the time there were about five newspapers in the group.

Ok, thank you. May I ask further about the police? Why are press credentials issued by the police? I mean....what do they have to do with journalism?

I see. Thank you.
