The whole concept of a university has been rendered irrelevant by digital conditions and outrageous student debt. Students themselves are the only ones offering a useful purpose.
I'm a librarian. The entire concept of a university was originally only of a library....no teachers no classes. You gained access to the library and read.you followed your interests and became self taught. All that teacher etc stuff came way later..if you were lucky..someone who had already mastered the books that interested you would drop by to read some more..and you struck up a conversation.
THIS is what we need to go back to....the internet is gone, and we need to return to the entire idea of colleges and univefsities..and go back to what was.
Their endowments should go to the students they forced to take the jab....and the entire "credentialing" thing..di05lomas etc needs to be rethought. How about you take a test at the end of however many years you went to the library...and you have eithered mastered the books or you have written another which will be your credential..by adding to the sum total of human knowledge...
Great interview with Lilly Sabella. I really hope that everyone responsible for these attacks on the students are held fully responsible. The police are mightily confused if they think that an invitation from someone gives them the right to assault, kidnap, forcibly detain, harass and intimidate peaceful people.
Imagine if they behaved this way every time there's a dispute between a landlord and tenant. Tenant gets caught smoking in violation of rental agreement and so helicopters, dogs and riot police are called in to remove them for "trespassing". What a joke. And in this case it doesn't even sound like the students were in violation of any contract.
I have listened to the first 2 hours. Excellent description of the situation, Eric, be it the situation in New Paltz, Purchase, other campuses in the US and the "collective West," or our world at large, May 2024. Powerful statement by the New Paltz student who's of Palestinian descent about her experience her entire time there, her being quite openly subjected to an attack upon all people of her background, and her decision to stay silent no more.
And a total THRILL to hear from the SUNY Purchase students, though what they were subjected to is utterly INFURIATING. They were conducting a QUIET protest, not violating either state laws or even campus regulations. And yet, a goon squad was assembled out of officers from a variety of departments and sent against them. armed officers backed by a helicopter. 80 arrested, a dozen injured.
Really good that they are not accepting their citations for "trespassing" (at a university where they are enrolled), and taking matters to trials and lawsuits against the campus. The administrators responsible for this action could not even cite what section of the student code of conduct they were violating. Major league ABSURD! And the karma kickback, their organization has grown ten-fold as a result. More evidence that "the kids are alright," this generation is starting to part ways with passivity and self absorption and starting to be involved in their world's social decisions making process.
I like your choice of music. 🤣 Thanks for picking up on my suggestion. A House is Not a Motel, the last verse is a vivid description of a a reality American society lived through with the Vietnam War, the war being brought via TV into our living rooms, so everyone could see the horror of the battlefield, undisguised by Hollywood makeup and scene setting.
"By the time that I'm through singing
The bells from the schools of wars will be ringing
More confusions, blood transfusions
The news today will be the movies for tomorrow
And the water's turned to blood
And if you don't think so
Go turn on your tub
And it it's mixed with mud
You'll see it turn to gray"
And, Maybe the People Will be the Times Or Between Clark and Hillsdale. An accounting by an eyewitness of the scene on the part of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood which was the core of the street part f the Southern California counterculture. It's the part between Clark and Hillsdale Avenues, only a few blocks, where all the music clubs, head shops, clothing stores were, LA's own Haight Ashbury (not talking about what was going on in the mansions in Malibu and Laurel Canyons) Love was like the house band at the Whiskey Au Go Go. People walked along one side of Sunset between the two streets, and then cross over and repeat, an action refereed to with "And then, you got back across the street."
All the pages i've seen with the lyrics have a line that's wrong. They have it as "Crowds of people standing everywhere 'Cross the street I'm at this laugh affair." It's actually ".... at this Slop Affair." There was a pretentious restaurant called the Food Affair, offering mediocre overpriced food and put-on "hippie" vibes. The people who hung out called the place "The Slop Affair," and Arthur Lee liked that. Learned all this from my ex-wife, who was part of that scene, actually lived on that part of Sunset for six months.
Listened to the rest of the program. The interview with Lilly Sabella is excellent. Great to have someone like her as an editor of “The Oracle,” the student paper at SUNY New Paltz, someone who is aware and has guts, displayed by the decision to go ahead with the editorial opposing the administration's actions. Regarding the LGBTQ and black students who are upset because campus president Wheeler is gay and black: good time to learn that someone who shares your sexual orientation or ethnic background doesn't necessarily share your class interests or even humane interests, that someone could easily be firmly anchored to the power structure. Good for the Oracle to call for dropping all the charges against the protesters. And “wow” re Gov Hochul’s threat to call in the National Guard to secure the graduation. Looking forward to hearing more from Lilly in the future.
Love’s tune You Set The Scene is about where Arthur Lee was seeing his life heading in early Fall 1967. He talked of a counterculture increasingly facing resistance from the system and fracturing on the inside, was wondering whether he’d survive long “time i’d been given is such a little while." Strong expression of wanting a change in society which is more than “a change in style,” telling those who think life is just a game “do you like the part you’re playing?”!!!
Alone Again Or. The only tune on Forever Changes (the source album for all the tunes played on this show) not written by Arthur Lee, it was authored by rhythm guitarist Bryan Mcclean. Yes, ultimately you need to love yourself, be comfortable with yourself, in order to deal with any situation you face socially, even being alone long term.

I hope they sue the cops too.
